Gavin Hodgson from the Building Research Establishment (BRE) suggested that a lot of the products required to be energy efficient came from Europe.
He also revealed that there was an issue over whether UK manufacturers could respond quickly to green housing demand and produce very high levels of windows and other similarly important products, adding that such products were not generally produced in the UK but were essential components in reducing energy usage.
“There’s all these issues about getting the supply chain set up before we can deliver the housing,” he suggested. “We need the products, and ideally we want them to come from the UK if possible to generate local benefits.”
He revealed that a structured training course for the construction industry was a good idea and suggested architects and designers needed to work as a “design team” to produce zero carbon homes.
Labour leadership favourite Gordon Brown recently revealed plans to build 200,000 carbon neutral homes per year if he is elected prime minister in the future.
