As the General Election draws near the parties pledge their commitment to improving the housing situation in Britain, each with their own agenda.
After the Prime Minister reaffirmed his housebuilding plans a few days ago, now the Liberal Democrats give more details about their future policies.
The Green Homes Bill proposed by the Liberal Democrats includes among others a council tax discount for homeowners who make their homes more energy efficient.
The discount will amount to at least £100 annually for the period of ten years.
The proposed measures aimed to improve not only energy efficiency but also promote renewable heat, include legislating for Zero Carbon Homes in new build developments, passing a new fuel strategy and making more than one million homes greener in two years thanks to ECO and the Green Deal.
The bill would build on hitherto achievements and incentivise people to insulate their homes. The Liberal Democrats’ target for that is to provide insulation for up to 10 million homes by 2025.
Apart from the council tax incentives and insulation goals, the new bill includes a reform of the Green Deal ‘pay as you save’ scheme into a new ‘Green Homes Loan Scheme’ which would extend the current scheme to include renewable heat and electricity.
Liberal Democrats have set an ambition that every home should reach a high standard of energy efficiency by 2035.
