NeighboursNoisy, unfriendly neighbours bringing you down? If you are looking to get away from them, Birmingham might be the place to move to.

According new research from Anglian Home Improvements, Birmingham (96%) is the most neighbourly city in the UK with the highest percentage of respondents willing to carry out neighbourly gestures.

In second place was Edinburgh (95%), followed by London (94%) and Cardiff (93%). Nottingham (93%), Glasgow (93%), Leeds (92%), Manchester (92%), Liverpool (91%) and Sheffield (90%) made out the rest of the top ten.

The results show community spirit is alive and well across the country, from small gestures like taking out the bins (53%) and lending a cup of sugar (56%), to clearing snowy driveways (35%), babysitting children (20%) and even cooking Sunday dinner (12%).

How well do you know your neighbours?

The survey also asked respondents to rank how well they know their neighbours on a scale of one to 10 – one being not at all and ten being very well.

The national average was 6.6, with residents in Edinburgh claiming to know their neighbours the best with an average rating of 7.1, while people in Leeds knew their neighbours the least at 6.1.

Just 3% of those questioned said they do not know their neighbours at all, compared to 12% who said they know their neighbours very well.

Melanie McDonald of Anglian Home Improvements said: “Great Britain has a long-standing tradition of close-knit communities and it’s great to see these are still alive and well.

“As well as traditional neighbourly gestures, many residents are now using technology to bring their community together and help each other out, from creating hyper-local websites, to setting up community groups on social media.”
