seasideBroadstairs has been named the UK’s top seaside property hotspot for 2017, according to new research from Zoopla.

The Kent coastal town has seen average property value growth of 10.45% in the last 12 months and has overtaken neighbouring Margate, which topped the league last year and has now dropped down to fifth spot.

Zoopla analysed the average property prices in Britain’s most popular seaside locations over the last 12 months to reveal the best and worst performing coastal towns for 2017.

Southern England continues to dominate the rankings, with Walton-on-the-Naze, Sidmouth and Penzance making up the rest of the top five.

Blyth in Northumberland, a well-known filming location for television drama Vera, bucks the trend as the only location in Northern England to make the top 10. Average property prices in the former shipbuilding town have risen by 5.64% since June 2016 to £130,566.

Salcombe in Devon continues to be the priciest place for a sea view, with average property prices checking in at £635,435 – an increase of £13,156 in the last year (2.11%).

Suffolk’s areas of outstanding natural beauty also continue to dominate the top spots, as properties in Aldeburgh place second (£517,517) and Southwold, third (£455,983). Cornwall’s Port Isaac, home to much loved television drama Doc Martin, also features in the top 10, with the average property costing £388,620.

Lawrence Hall, spokesperson for Zoopla, said: “With Broadstairs’ Dickensian history and proximity to London it’s easy to see why it tops the list of this year’s best performing seaside hotspots.

“It’s also positive to see that eight of the 10 top towns are new entrants – the likes of Blyth and Southend-On-Sea have enjoyed multi-million pound investments recently, helping increase their desirability. Other new entries such as Clacton-on-Sea, Newquay and Penzance will also benefit from further investment soon, with large regeneration, new housing and tourism projects in the pipeline.”
