Phil Spencer’s top five budget home upgrades for sellers

Selling your home this Autumn? TV’s Phil Spencer reveals five tricks for making your home look attractive to buyers – and they all cost less than £500

It’s September – a new month, a new season and a new school year. It’s also the time when the property market jumps back into action following the summer lull.

If you are about to put your home on the market, you may be looking for ways to make your property more attractive to buyers.

If so, you may be interested in the latest advice from property expert and TV presenter Phil Spencer. He is sharing his wisdom on the best budget-friendly upgrades – all under £500 – to give your home that extra shine ready for viewings.

According to Wickes Home Move Heroes, with whom Spencer has partnered to deliver his tips, buyers are prioritising ‘move-in ready’ homes to avoid the expense of renovations during the winter months.

“You don’t need a full renovation to impress buyers,” said Spencer, “far from it. In my experience, it’s the small, thoughtful touches that really help a home stand out.

“Storage is an absolute must in my opinion – clear, clutter-free spaces instantly make a home feel calmer and more inviting.

“Add to that a fresh coat of neutral paint, and you can completely shift the mood of a room, making it feel brighter, more spacious, and easier for buyers to picture themselves in.

“With the right know-how and a few clever products, you can make all these changes for under £500. It’s about smart upgrades, not big spends.”

Spencer has kindly shared some of his tips from the House Move Heroes scheme below.

Phil Spencer’s top five features that make buyers say ‘yes’

  1. Smart storage that actually works

Clutter is a dealbreaker, says Spencer. “Buyers are drawn to homes that feel organised and serene – not crammed and chaotic.

“Think built-in shelving, hallway cupboards or stylish storage units that hide the mess and highlight the space. It’s not just storage – it’s breathing room.”

  1. Walls that whisper ‘fresh start’

Peeling paint and bold colours can make buyers hesitate. So, instead Spencer advises using calming neutrals which enable viewers to imagine their lives unfolding in your space.

“Freshen up with soft greys, warm whites or earthy tones that create an instant sense of calm, light and possibility,” he added.

  1. Let there be (natural) light

“Light makes everything feel bigger, better and more inviting,” says Spencer. “Bounce it around with mirrors, swap heavy curtains for sheers, and keep windowsills clear. This achieves airy, open rooms that say ‘ahh’ the moment someone steps in.”

  1. An entrance that charms on arrival

You never get a second chance at a first impression, Spencer says. He recommends a clean, well-painted front door, a smart doormat and a potted plant or two make your home feel loved and well looked after. This will create a positive feeling before the viewers have even stepped inside.

  1. Character that tells a story

According to Spencer, modern buyers love charm and soul. “Whether it’s a decorative fireplace, exposed floorboards or a heritage-style detail, a little character gives your home a heart” he adds. “It’s what makes people remember your space – and feel emotionally drawn to it.”
