A spokesperson from the HBF said that he was pleased Brown was endorsing the need to increase the UK’s housing supply, however he was also quick to state that more details will be needed before the housing industry starts celebrating.
He indicated that the HBF wanted to know how the recent plans related to what the government had previously announced, adding that the climate change agenda was very much here to stay and was something the industry would not shy away from.
“In terms of dealing with emissions from homes, we need to take into account the existing stock as well,” he said. “New homes are only going to account for one per cent of the total housing stock each year, so 99 per cent of homes in the country are there already so obviously it makes sense to target them.”
Mr Brown recently visited a new housing development in Southampton and said: “We want to build more homes with social housing so there are enough homes for children.”
