Skipton Building Society found that as many as one in four people aged 20 to 35 were counting on parental help.
And a further one in eight admitted that they expected their parents to act as mortgage guarantors, putting the parental home at risk.

Skipton said that the survey’s findings mirrored the trends they had seen as a mortgage lender.
Jennifer Holloway, from Skipton Building Society, said: “We have certainly seen a rise in the number of parents acting as guarantors on our mortgages, or even going as far as buying a house with their child.
