Savills spokesperson Lucian Cook has said that most families will go for older properties because they are more likely to offer space and a patch of land than new builds.
First-time buyers, on the other hand, see functionality and price as the most important factors and buying a property without a garden is a ‘sacrifice’ which most are willing to make to get onto the property ladder.
“I would imagine that families would be a group of people who would strongly consider a garden important. And I would imagine, in many instances, it’s going to be the more affluent as well. Where, for example, you have period properties, if it’s got good, established grounds then that’s going to add value.”
He added that many youngsters who are buying their first home are simply looking for something low maintenance and a garden with lots of hedges and shrubs is not necessarily practical for them.
