The National Insulation Association (NIA) has called on homeowners to act now in order to cut the impact of the winter energy bills.
With temperatures dropping, heating is likely to be turned on across the country in the coming weeks.
However, the NIA said that it could be used less if people took steps to insulate their homes.
Chief executive Neil Marshall said: “With the cost of fuel bills ever increasing and as much as 60 per cent of a home’s heat escaping through uninsulated walls and roofs, householders should take the necessary steps to save energy and money.
“The simplest and most cost-effective method is to insulate the home. Cavity wall and loft insulation could save around £310 year on year and both can be installed in less than a day.
“So we urge householders to act now as winter is fast approaching; in many cases the cost of insulating is now free under the CERT scheme which ends this December.
“Even Properties not suitable for cavity wall insulation can still be insulated. Solid wall insulation and loft insulation combined can result in even greater savings, at around £635 per year.”
