With over 200,000 people visiting hospital each year with injuries sustained from tackling DIY jobs in the home, M&S Money is advising DIY enthusiasts to consider whether they have both the necessary skills and accidental damage insurance cover in place, before they embark on work that may turn out to be more costly in the long run.
Andrew Ferguson, M&S head of general insurance, said: "Spring is one of the most popular times of year to kick start all those DIY jobs that have been accumulating over the winter months. But even simple painting projects don’t always go to plan. Our research shows that a fifth of DIY Dads admit that they have spilled paint on carpets and flooring while decorating at home.
"We would urge people to check their home insurance policy covers them for accidental damage and whether there is a limit to this cover.
"If people are attempting more complex DIY projects at home that should really be carried out by professionals; they are risking much more serious consequences than having to replace ruined carpeting."
Simple steps from M&S Money to reduce the risk of home emergencies during DIY season:
Avoid any jobs involving electrical wiring or gas installations – these must be undertaken by a qualified person
Keep all products in their original containers and make sure all chemicals and paints are kept out of reach of children
Wear appropriate clothing such as hard-wearing shoes, and use eye masks or goggles if appropriate
Make sure someone else is on hand to provide support when using ladders.
