A spokesman said: “At the moment, because they are not being done in a very large scale, it does cost considerably more to build an eco-friendly home, anything up to £25,000 on the initial price.”

He added that an increase in the number of such homes being constructed would lower the price, but also noted that the affordability issue was suppressing demand in the first place.
Instead, the spokesman noted, people were tending to introduce more eco-friendly measures into their own homes, such as insulation.
According to the Energy Saving Trust, fitting insulation in an uninsulated loft will cost £110 on average and save nearly one tonne of carbon a year.
The organisation also notes that grants for such measures are widely available.
