With currently less that 30 carbon neutral homes nationwide, the intermediaries might well be right as the Government seem to have set themselves a hard deadline to meet.
In addition, only 44 per cent of all mortgage advisers feel that by the time we hit 2050 we will have been able to reduce our carbon emissions by 50 per cent even thought the Government are actually working towards a target of 60 per cent.
Keith Astill, managing director at UCB Home Loans thinks that they might just be right: The views of intermediaries are important because they are responsible for arranging a large proportion of home loans including new build developments and are ideally placed to make a judgement.
Astill continues: Whilst part of the reduction in carbon emissions will need to come from industry, the research indicated that most people are not yet aware of the actions that they will need to take if the UK is to meet its targets on carbon emissions. A comment that is anything but throwaway when taking into account that the countrys 21 million homes currently account for 27 per cent of all CO2 emissions.
Majority of advisers are certain that homeowners have no idea about the size of their own carbon footprint, with 94 per cent agreeing that people are also in the dark about how they would start reducing it, even if they did know the actual size.
Interestingly, two thirds of advisers believe that the lenders themselves should be taking action on green issues and a further 58 per cent think that the intermediaries themselves should take some sort of responsibility.
